Behind the scenes with MOO designers
I always appreciate receiving a handmade present, there’s something rather personal and special about it. When we decided to make new sets of Greeting Cards, I wanted to bring as much as possible of a handmade feel into my designs.
For inspiration I settled on one of the most iconic seasonal themes and symbols; the snowflake. Snowflakes are incredibly intricate and fascinating objects that always amaze me when I see them up close. ‘But how do I bring the human touch into a printed product?’, I asked myself. The answer to this question lies in the combination of paper and photography. I decided to create five different snowflake designs by cutting and curling paper.
My designs required the painstaking task of cutting and slicing the paper, so that elements of the snowflake would but completely cut out while others would be curled up to give some dimension to the paper cut outs.
With the help of our photographer Rob, the delicate and fragile paper snowflakes were photographed against vibrant coloured backgrounds to create that lovely, warm Christmassy feel.
Making something by hand means that not everything is perfect. If you look closely, you will notice that there are little imperfections in the snowflakes – after all, if you wanted everything to be perfect and immaculate you would make your snowflake digitally. And that would be boring!
While we would love to make every card by hand that we send out, we did realise that making things by hand do take time and we simply are not as quick and handy as Santa’s little helpers…

Gorgeous. Only wee imperfection I can see is there are 2 more points than you usually find on a snowflake. But then 8 IS such a cool number…
