This model represents one of the three built as 1/3 scale flying models of the Avro 698 Vulcan bomber, for the investigation of the characteristics of the delta wing plan form. The first prototype was made in September 1949. The Vulcan itself first flew on 30th August, 1952. The plane, which only saw service with the Royal Air Force, was an important part of Britain's nuclear deterrent from the 1950s onward. It was phased out during 1984.
